The Health Benefit of Water In Menopause and Peri-MenopauseWater Holds the Gift of Life The primary health benefit of water is that, as a terrific solvent, it dissolves, processes, and transports nutrients, and then enables your body to eliminate waste and other toxins.
Have you ever noticed when you've been out in the wind a few hours that your skin seems to have more of those tiny lines, and the tiny lines you usually have are a bit deeper? That's because you have gotten dehydrated, and your body will "borrow" some of the water in your skin to use for functions it considers more important - i.e. the transport of nutrients and elimination of wastes. The trick to getting your full health benefit of water is to simply get enough of it. You know your body is going to lose fluids through skin evaporation and trips to the bathroom, so like you've probably heard for years: Drink 8 - 10 glasses of water each day. It is best to start each morning with a glass of water. Your intestinal tract can easily become too dry during the night; If you're asleep, you can't drink any water. And when you start out dry on the inside, it can take your body several hours to catch up so that it can function properly. Remember - one of the secrets to great skin is the elimination of wastes. If your bowels don't totally empty each day, trust me, the toxins will build up and circulate back into your tissues. Avoid diuretics like caffeine and alcohol. If you do imbibe, be sure to increase your water intake by the same volume. For instance, if you have 4 ounces of wine, drink an extra glass of water first. Cup of coffee, extra cup of water. Health Benefit of Water From the Water ExpertDr. Batmanghelidj, author of Your Body's Many Cries for Water, states that "Skin health is just the reflection of our internal health. Any dermatologist can tell what part of your body is affected just by looking at your skin. Hydration and detoxification starts inside and continues to the outside. So, keeping beautiful healthy looking skin is a side benefit of drinking water." Keep your skin from looking drawn and dull by simply drinking water. Does it sound too easy? If you need water to bring necessary nutrients to your skin, to plump your skin, and to carry away the toxins that can cause skin problems, doesn't it just make sense? It's not a huge effort, and the benefits of drinking water are available at a very low cost. Spring water is probably the ideal drink for anyone, but unfortunately, most of us don't have a spring in our backyard. You can buy bottled spring water, but there are drawbacks there, too. Plastic water bottles are an environmental hazard and require 47 million gallons of oil per year just for U.S. production alone! And you may have noticed in the news lately that phthalates from plastics are suspected of wreaking sexual havoc in the population because of their estrogenic properties. Science has not yet figured out all the side effects of these synthetic estrogens, so your best bet is to avoid them when possible. You can sometimes get spring water in glass bottles, but again, lots of fuel to truck it around the country. If you have a quality water filter at home, you can recycle a glass bottle or buy a steel drinking water bottle, and carry your filtered water with you. Still portable, better for your health, and better for the environment. Healthy Hydration is NOT the Same as Retaining WaterMost water retention is caused by one of two things: Either your body is trying desperately to dilute toxins that it is too overwhelmed to process, or you are chronically dehydrated, and your body is trying to hold on to the water that is available. If you've ever tried a starvation diet to lose weight (and I dearly hope you have not), you probably noticed that after awhile, your metabolism went down to match your calorie intake. Maybe it seems counter-intuitive, but both of these water retention problems can be addressed by drinking good, pure water. The organs, tissues, and even the cells in your body all have an intelligence. Different from the kind that's in your brain, obviously, it is considered to be more primitive, and is probably based on survival. If you deny your tissues the health benefit of water that they need to function, they will "grab" and hold whatever fluid you have made available. Kinda makes you think about the stuff you drink every day. If you're not accustomed to a healthy 8 - 10 glasses a water daily, you may have to work up to it. Try an extra eight ounces daily for a week, then an additional 8 ounces the next week, and so on, until you're up to enough to experience the true health benefit of water.
